On 4 February 2009, Origin and Austevoll Seafoods ASA (‘Austevoll’) announced that they had reached agreement to combine their respective Irish, UK and Norwegian fishmeal and fish oil operations.
Origin through its marine protein operations, (‘United Fish Industries’ or ‘UFI’) is a leading producer of fishmeal and fish oil in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Austevoll’s wholly owned Norwegian subsidiary Welcon Invest AS (‘Welcon’ or the ‘Company’) is Europe’s premier manufacturer of fishmeal and fish oil with operations in Norway.
Origin's Marine Proteins business is a primary producer of fishmeal and fish oil in Ireland and the UK.
Fishmeal and fish oil are key raw material ingredients of fish feed. Fishmeal is a valuable, internationally traded protein used mostly in diets for farmed fish and pig and poultry diets.
In Ireland, Origin's Marine Protein business is located at Killybegs, which is the country's major fish-landing port. In the UK processing operations are similarly well located at Grimsby and Aberdeen.
